Immunization of broiler breeders to protect progeny against Campylobacter infections Ghent University
This project investigates the role of maternal antibodies in protecting broiler chickens against
Campylobacter infections. It comprises three work packages: 1/ a cost-benefit analysis, 2/ a field study
on antibody levels in chicks and their relationship with onset of infection, and 3/ immunization of
breeders to look into the protective effect of maternal antibodies against campylobacter infection in
their progeny.
Adjuvanting aminopeptidase N-targeted oral vaccines to protect against gut pathogens Ghent University
Aminopeptidase N-mediated delivery of vaccine antigens to the gut immune system holds great promise to develop efficacious oral vaccines to combat gut pathogens in pigs. This project builds further on previous data showing protective immunity against infection with pathogenic E. coli induced by oral vaccination of piglets with aminopeptidase N-targeted vaccine antigens. In this project, we aim to optimize the design of our aminopeptidase ...
Environmental Migration: “The New Normal” How to address the current legal impasse and protect environmentally-induced migrants KU Leuven
The nexus between environmental change and migration is not newly emerged; however, the academic debate around its exact relationship is rapidly growing. Undeniably, it is difficult to establish straightforward links between environmental degradation and human mobility. Therefore, in order to examine the state of art and understand this multifaceted phenomenon, this project will explore the persistent definitional quagmire. The lack of a ...
Exploring levan oligosaccharide-producing organisms to protect strawberry fruit KU Leuven
The use of Bio-Control Organisms (BCOs) and natural protective or so called “priming” compounds is gaining momentum, offering opportunities for sustainable and environmentally friendly disease control on various crop species. Strawberry is a highly popular small fruit crop worldwide with a significant economic importance and a large market share in Europe. In Belgium and Estonia strawberry is the most important berry crop. Diseases caused by ...

An investigation of the development and maintenance of body image problems in middle childhood: May the parent-child relationship protect against the effect of appearance-focused media? Ghent University
The present project investigates the development and maintenance of body image problems and whether the parent-child relationship protects against the effect of appearance-focused media on children’s body image and wellbeing? This proposal is innovative because its focus on middle childhood, examination of both risk and protective factors and the challenging methodology using a longitudinal, ecological momentary assessment and experimental ...
Bacterial root endophytes to protect plants against cold temperatures Ghent University
Like animals, plants are known to host a community of endophytic microorganisms that live inside
their tissues, without causing harm. Starting from the observation that some plants seem to tolerate
winter cold quite well, we intend to study the contribution that endophytic bacteria in roots make
to plant cold tolerance. By looking directly at the DNA of the endophytes without cultivating them,
we will ...
COmpetitive Methods to protect local Public Administration from Cyber security Threats KU Leuven
Cyber threats are the most significant and growing risk for public administrations (PA). However, technological, organisational and structural issues hamper the ability, especially for local PAs (LPAs) to improve their cyber security level. Budget constraints and evolving legal, ethical, societal and privacy regulations render the situation even more complex.
COMPACT’s goal is to empower local LPAs to become the main actors of their ...
Introduction of pathogens by pollen, bees and bee products: risk identification in order to the protect plant and pollinator Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
The aim of this project (FOD-APIRISK) was to improve the protection of both the bees themselves, as well as the plants they pollinate, against diseases. It mainly concerned the risk of the introduction of (quarantine) pathogens via pollination, with pollen purchased abroad. The deterioration of wild bee populations and the increasing winter mortality of domestic honeybees and the related ...
