Supporting the development of self-regulation in infants: a promising strategy in preventive mental health care Ghent University
A major challenge of the newborn child is to learn to regulate internal states (physiological, emotional, and cognitive) and behavior. The child’s self-regulation stems from successful co-regulation between the baby and its caregiver(s) and constitutes the basis of mental health. Regulation problems (RP) in early childhood are the seeds for emergent developmental psychopathology and for persistent mental health problems later in life. Given ...
Supporting the development of self-regulation in infants: a promising strategy in preventive mental health care KU Leuven
Knowledge Gap (KG): Infant self-regulation is hypothesized to originate from or persist within parental co-regulation, which itself largely depends on parental self-regulation. Yet, the study of early RP is limited by a lack of clear concepts, objective measures and diagnostic criteria. In clinical contexts, professionals often have to rely on subjective assessments of mother, father and child problems. Furthermore, the proposed links between ...

Self-regulation in Khat Use: Ethnographic Study in Ethiopia Ghent University
The study focuses on self-regulation in khat use in Ethiopia. It uses a qualitative, community-based ethnographic approach to understand khat users’ definitions and reasons for controlled/uncontrolled use and harm reduction techniques they employ to prevent or minimize the negative effects of chewing. The study also looks into the perspectives of khat chewers and other stakeholders on khat regulation.
Inflammation, self-regulation and weight loss resistance in children and adolescents with obesity Ghent University
Childhood obesity is a complex health issue that has reached epidemic levels. The adverse effects on the physical and psychological health make it important to fully understand this disease. Especially resistance to weight loss and maintaining the loss after treatment stays problematic. Obesity-associated inflammation, assumed to have a detrimental role also on mental health, could help in understanding this problem. However, research did not ...
Inflammation, self-regulation and weight loss resistance in children and adolescents with obesity Ghent University
Current project will study the role of inflammation in obese adolescents by evaluating: how inflammation affects maladaptive eating via self-regulation, whether maladaptive eating leads to weight gain and increases of inflammation and psychosocial stress, and whether this stress moderates the relationship between self-regulation and maladaptive eating. We will also evaluate whether psychological interventions can enhance self-regulation and ...
Educational technology, self-regulation & conceptual understanding in STEM KU Leuven
To be successful in higher education, STEM students not only have to develop conceptual understanding in wide range of science topics but also self-regulated learning skills. This PhD researches how educational technology can influence both the development of self-regulatory learning skills and conceptual understanding in mechanics. The research builds on earlier work of Hardebolle et al. (2020) and the framework of Tormey et al. (2019), who ...
Cross-frequency relationships between neural and cardiac rhythms in the context of self-regulation through meditation and its application to novel neuro-biofeedback protocols KU Leuven
Cross frequency coupling between brain oscillations has been extensively studied and is thought to underlie cross-talk between distinct neural processes. Recent accounts suggest that not only the rhythms of the brain interact through cross-frequency coupling, but that also the frequencies of body oscillations (e.g. heart and respiratory rhythms) are impacted by and aligned with oscillations at the level of the brain (Binary hierarchy brain ...
