Shared leadership in sport teams KU Leuven
Within team sports, it has been demonstrated that not only the coach, but also good athlete leaders in the team are the driving force behind a team’s performance. To ensure that the leadership potential in the team can flourish, it is essential to create the optimal environment in which shared leadership is effective. In this research, we identify the boundary conditions that moderate the relation between shared leadership and performance. ...
Sport scheduling: new insights in algorithmic performance Ghent University
Scheduling sports competitions is an extremely complex optimization problem where various wishes need to be taken into account. This proposal creates a benchmarking system which allows to compare the performance of various algorithms. Our system will show which approach works best for which type of sport scheduling problem. We also develop new algorithms for sport scheduling problems in amateur competitions.

Multi-league sport scheduling Ghent University
This project focuses on the question how to organize and schedule a vast number of sports leagues simultaneously, which is highly relevant in various youth and amateur sports competitions. We study how this can be done in a sustainable way (e.g. by reducing travel distance), while respecting the capacity of the available sports infrastructure, and several fairness criteria.

Sport scheduling under uncertainty Ghent University
Scheduling sport competitions is a complex optimization problem where various wishes need to be satisfied. However, the resulting schedule is rarely played as planned due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. bad weather). This proposal abandons the traditional assumption of deterministic problem parameters. We empirically study the impact of uncertainty on sport schedules and develop methods that are robust to changing environments.
Sport on the European agenda: a research into the dynamics behind the growing influence of the European Union Ghent University
The European Union gradually gains competences in the field of sports policy. This research tries to shed a light on the process behind the growing competences of the European Union by studying the dynamics behind the europeanisation of sports policy from the perspective of competing theories such as liberal intergovernementalism, neofunctionalism and sociological new instituionalism.

Virtual Reality in return to sport screening – The missing link to identify those at risk for ACL reinjury? Ghent University
A common injury in athletes is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, necessitating a surgical reconstruction to restore knee stability. Although ACL reconstruction is followed by an intensive rehabilitation period, with an average duration of 12 months before return to sport (RTS), the reinjury rate is extremely high (1/4). The inability of current RTS screening tools to identify athletes at risk for re-rupture contributes to this ...
