The construction of social classification schemata: occupational statistics in Belgium, Great-Britain and the United States. Ghent University
Since the nineteenth century, both Europeans and Americans have become "calculating people". The rise and evolution of the administrative statistics in three countries is studied by means of sociological and epistimological methods. The statistics inform us about both the social realities they strive to measure and the constructs which organize that measuring.

The role of experience and its statistics for cognitive representations in the brain. KU Leuven
In this project we study the role of experience and its statistics for cognitive representations in the brain. It has been hypothesized that visual experience leads to single neurons in the monkey brain with strong selectivity for complex objects, and to regions in the human brain with a preference for particular categories of highly familiar objects. This view suggests that adult visual experience causes dramatic local changes in the ...

HISSTAT development of a central database of statistics from the 19th and 20th century available at a local level Ghent University
the proposal aims at the development of a central database for historical statistics in Flanders and Belgium which are available down to the level of the municipalities since 1795. The intention of the database is to protect and exploit the rich patrimonium of historic statistics of Flanders and Belgium, and to offer access to the public and a number of various applications. The central database is equipped with an informationsystem that ...

Algebraic Statistics: Conditional Independence Models KU Leuven
This PhD proposal is on discrete and Gaussian conditional independence models and their inference problem. Conditional independence (CI) is a fundamental concept in statistics and information theory, while the term 'Gaussian' specifically refers to the multivariate normal distribution. Realizability and inference are two fundamental challenges in statistics, particularly when dealing with Conditional Independence (CI) models and graphical ...
