Profiles of university students with reading difficulties in the learning of Spanish as a foreign language Profielen van universiteitsstudenten met leesproblemen bij het leren van Spaans als vreemde taal KU Leuven
This research is confined to the analysis of the silent reading fluency and its role in the identification of reading profiles with difficulties among a population of adult and university learners who learn Spanish as a foreign language. The objective of this study is to understand how the development of the silent reading fluency —the main activity on expert readers— intervenes with reading comprehension and which is their causal ...

Plasma cfRNA biomarker tail genes for cancer screening and monitoring Ghent University
Circulating nucleic acids in blood plasma form an attractive resource to study human health and disease. We examined plasma cell-free RNA profiles for a variety of cancer types and demonstrated the potential of using patient-specific alterations in cell-free RNA profiles for discriminating cancer patients from controls. This method could open novel opportunities for cancer screening and therapy response monitoring. While the method has been ...
Potential (research) approach to reduce/stop routine tail docking and keeping pigs with long(er) tails Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
European and Belgian legislation states that systematic tail docking of piglets is not allowed. Before deciding on these interventions, other less-invasive measures should be taken to prevent tail-biting and other behavioral disorders. The client (the Flemish Animal Welfare Service) is apprehensive about the possible deterioration of animal welfare (additional pain due to a tail-bite epidemic, infections, ...
Fundamental advances for the fire safety of tall timber structures including the fire decay phase Ghent University
Urban densification, sustainability drivers and technological advances foster the development of high-rise structures using bio-based materials like engineered wood products. Their main worldwide barrier relates to fire safety. Although a natural fire has a decay phase, structural capacity is traditionally assessed according to a standard fire curve: an unrealistic ever-increasing thermal exposure with time, conceived as worst-case design ...
Simultaneous Evolution of a Seahorse Tail based Robotic Manipulator and Controller. Ghent University
By drawing inspiration from the functional behavior of the seahorse tail, we propose a novel type of bio-inspired robotic manipulator that combines the rigidness and strength offered by hard robot arms and the dynamic conformation potential and flexibility of soft robotics. Additionally, we propose a novel and generic methodology for robot morphology and controller co-optimization through evolution.
