Development of Tough and Strong Zirconia Ceramics for Dental Implants

Boek - Dissertatie

This doctoral research focused on the processing of innovative tough, strong, reliable and damage-tolerant zirconia ceramics and zirconia-based composites. In the first approach (1), the microstructure and the phase transformability of the monolithic tetragonal zirconia, a 10 mol% ceria-stabilized zirconia (10Ce), was optimized by doping with 0.2-2.0 mol% divalent oxides. The dopants were aimed to tailor the grain-boundary structure. The second approach focused on introducing secondary phases. This included (2) in-situ generated lanthanum hexa-aluminate (La0.9Al11.7O20.0) platelets in a 20 wt% alumina-toughened 12Ce-TZP based zirconia composite and (3) alumina-platelet addition (3 wt%) in a 20 wt% alumina-toughened 2Y-TZP based zirconia composite.
