Hoe de oude Klingsor wordt verschalkt: Wagner door Romeo Castellucci en Ivo van Hove

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

This chapter examines two different approaches to the staging of Wagner in recent productions by Castellucci and Van Hove. Castellucci's Parsifal is read as an extension of the symbolic suggestiveness in the work, making full use of the music's potential for conceptual vagueness and the expression of the unconscious. Van Hove's staging of the Ring cycle, however, distinguishes itself by its high level of concreteness and realism. The reference to the contemporary world of ICT and information networks enabled the director to bring Wagner's mythological narrative as close to realism as possible. The approach is both a radical departure from the textual content of the work and a production that is marked by a high degree of literalness. This paradoxical situation is the starting point for a reflection on the relationship between stage narrative and musical symbolism in Wagner.
