Exotic epilepsy

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

This paper presents a patient with an in Europe less known cause of epileptic insults in adults, i.e. neuro-cysticercosis. The disease is provoked by the parasite Taenia solium which infects humans and pigs. After ingestion of the eggs, oncospheres develop and set-tle in brain tissue where cysts are formed. The clinical presentation depends on the num-ber and the localization of the cysts as well as on the immune response of the host to them. The diag-nosis is made, based on a diagram with diagnostic criteria and is divided in four subclasses. The treat-ment combines anti-epileptic drugs and cysticide medication, depending on the disease stage and the number and localization of the cysts.
