Diagnostische en therapeutische aanpak van milde cognitieve stoornissen (mild cognitive impairment) bij ouderen
Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an earlier foretoken
of cognitive decline than very early dementia
(among which Alzheimer’s Disease). There are
no internationally accepted diagnostic criteria. The
diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation, neuropsychological
examination, laboratory investigations,
biomarkers and neurological imaging. MCI is
heterogeneous.
Actually therapeutical medical options do not exist,
and management focuses on lifestyle strategies such
as physical exercises and social activities, prevention
strategies and treatment of non-cognitive symptoms.
Education and support remain essential for
both patients and relatives. New therapies which are
currently being developed for Alzheimer’s Disease,
may possibly also be effective for MCI.
