On the hunt for regularities: An investigation of children's early patterning competencies

Boek - Dissertatie

This PhD research is part of a wider research project, namely the C1 project. The aim of the C1 project is to investigate the integrated development of four core mathematical skills, namely (1) mathematical patterns and structures, (2) computational estimation, (3) proportional reasoning and (4) probabilistic reasoning, in children between four and nine years old. Not only the knowledge and skills, but also the disposition to these four core competencies will be measured. The four competencies will be followed longitudinally in three hundred children, from preschool to third grade, by means of qualitative assessments and advanced data analyzes. In addition, four intervention studies will be carried out in similar cohorts. Each of these interventions will focus on an ambitious experimental program to encourage the development of one of the four core competencies. Finally, attention is also paid to individual differences in the development of core competencies. In this PhD research, the focus will be on the first part of this project, namely mathematical patterns and structures.
