Wolfgang Rihm and Franz Schubert. An enigmatic Encounter

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

At the beginning of Wolfgang Rihm’s career, a few compositions are inspired by Franz Schubert. In his texts, Rihm never devoted an essay exclusively to Schubert: the composer is only mentioned in relation to other subjects, such as a comparison with Beethoven, for instance. Other composers, such as Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, received more attention in Rihm’s music and his texts. Schubert as inspiration, as allusion not quotation, stays present until today. In this essay the multiple kinds of relationship between Rihm and Schubert are researched, not only in the Lieder, but, with reasons which will be explained, more in Schubert’s instrumental music.
