Involvement and therapeutic potential of the GABAergic system in the fragile X syndrome

Various lines of evidence point to an involvement of the GABAergic system in the fragile X syndrome, an inherited form of mental retardation. This review aligns all the evidence that the inhibitory system is underexpressed in this disorder and illustrates that the GABAergic system is a suitable target for targeted drug therapy in patients.
