Looking back to the ancient realisation that humans are fundamentally mimetic creatures, this project accounts for the mimetic nature of the plastic transformations constitutive of the posthuman subject, which in turn allows for its move away from definitions of the human as a pure, bounded, and stable being. The relevance of a mimetic perspective on the posthuman is confirmed by the significant theoretical and methodological overlaps between the two fields, overlaps that have so far remained largely unnoticed by both scholarships. This project fills this gap by establishing, for the first time in a systematic way, the considerable relevance of mimesis for narrative and theoretical developments of the posthuman, eventually building a mimetic theory of the posthuman. In doing so, it will participate in furthering our understanding of the posthuman, mimesis and incidentally the cognitive, epistemological and anthropological value of fiction.Abstract NL: Het posthumane is een benaming die duidt op speculaties over de volgende fase voor de menselijke soort. De term omvat ook de herconceptualisering van wat het betekent om mens te zijn, vertrekkende vanuit deze speculaties. Dit project bestudeert het posthumane door middel van een hedendaagse herformulering van het concept mimesis, en hanteert hierbij een bredere kijk dan realistische representatie om de oorsprong van mimesis (mimos; acteur, voorstelling) in imiterend gedrag (onder andere nabootsing, identificatie, besmetting, en invloeden) te achterhalen. Teruggaand op het aloude besef dat de mens een mimetisch wezen is, verklaart deze studie de mimetische aard van transformaties van het postmenselijke subject. Dit laat ons toe om huidige definities van de mens als een zuiver, begrensd en stabiel wezen te verwerpen. Beide concepten delen zowel theoretische en methodologische raakvlakken waardoor het hanteren van een mimetisch perspectief ter bestudering van het posthumane uiterst relevant is. Deze raakvlakken zijn in hedendaagse studies grotendeels onopgemerkt gebleven. Door op systematische wijze het belang van mimesis voor de narratieve en theoretische ontwikkelingen van het posthumane aan te tonen, dicht deze studie een kennis kloof en ontwikkelt bovendien een mimetische theorie over het posthumane. Aldus levert het project een substantiële bijdrage tot een beter begrip van het posthumane, mimesis en de cognitieve, epistemologische en antropologische waarde van fictie.
