Method development in medicinal chemistry

Boek - Dissertatie

Epilepsy is a neurological condition affecting over 65 million people worldwide. 30% of the patients do not respond to the drugs currently available on the market (about 25). In an ongoing collaboration we recently helped identifying plant extracts as potential anti-epileptic drugs. Based on the structure of one of the constituents, a set of analogues was synthesized that showed interesting activity. In this project we intend to further develop this compound as an anti-epileptic drug by making various analogues of the structure as well as via unraveling the mode of action of this novel compound. Moreover, the development of novel methodologies in the field of medicinal chemistry is explored in this thesis. The primary enabling technologies that were employed, are radical chemistry and solvent-free gas chemistry.
