Hyperfine structure studies of heavy elements by in-gas-laser ionisation and spectroscopy

Boek - Dissertatie

My thesis work entitled "Investigation of the hyperfine structureof heavy elements by in gas jet resonance ionization spectroscopy" willconsist mainly in two parts.
In the first part, the constructionand test of an Atomic Beam Unit (ABU) in the IGLIS laboratory at the KULeuven will be carried out. The ABU will be used for offline experiments to characterize laser ionization schemes and different broadening mechanisms due to the laser spectral profile. Spectra from the ABU will be compared with spectra obtained in the supersonic gas jet and validated with ion trajectory simulations. The setup and testing of a new laser system and the study of the gas jet conditioning will also be part of these offline studies. Once the laser system is operational and the gas jet formation and resulting broadening mechanisms are well understood the laser system will be moved to the 'Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds-Super Separator Spectrometer' (GANIL-S3), France. This will be the second part of my thesis work. In GANIL-S3 I will use the laserion source developed at KU Leuven to perform in-gas-jet laser spectroscopy experiments on exotic nuclei in the heavy and super-heavy region of the chart of nuclides. These isotopes will be produced in heavy ion fusion evaporation reactions and separated in flight by Super Separator Spectrometer (S3). These studies will allow us to perform laser spectroscopy experiments and determine ground state properties of heavy nuclei situated in a region of the chart of nuclides where only limited information is available.
