2.02 - Penicillins

Penicillins are a subclass of the beta-lactam antibiotics displaying a marked bactericidal activity because of their bacterial cell wall synthesis inhibition. Since their discovery, they still remain among the most used antibiotics in clinics. However, bacterial resistance development urges continuous synthetic efforts to expand the arsenal of antibiotics at our disposal. In this context, synthetic research on penicillins was very active during the golden era of antibiotic research. This book chapter gathers the most recent chemical developments in penicillin research from a theoretical, analytical, and synthetic viewpoint, and concludes with the applications.
