Cable Penetration Degree in High Voltage Networks

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

Extra high voltage (EHV) underground cables are increasingly being deployed within the power system, yet they can introduce several challenges making transmission system operators cautious about applying underground solutions. This paper aims to present an overview of the different phenomena that arise when introducing EHV cables. The paper investigates how these phenomena evolve as the amount of EHV underground cables in the grid increases and explores if these phenomena could limit the amount of EHV cables installed. The aspects studied in this paper are steady state reactive power management, voltage stability, overload management of mixed overhead/underground cable systems, resonance conditions, and switching phenomena. Steady state reactive power management is studied in detail using a sample transmission grid derived from the Austrian high voltage grid.
