Regulating the digital sports broadcasting market : new players, old problems

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

While the emergence of the digital broadcasting has created newfound opportunities for consumers and market participants alike, so too has it created further regulatory complexity within both domestic and global media markets. Upon first defining key economic and competition issues within sport media markets, the chapter reviews major events legislation across varied international contexts. In doing so, it is concluded that the growth in over-the-top broadcast services has largely expanded upon pre-existing regulatory complexity. The chapter concludes that there is a general need to update major events legislation in response to developments in broadcast technology, which provides regulators a window of opportunity to redress pre-existing shortcomings in such policies.
