Translation, translation revision and post-editing competence models: where are we now?

Translation proper is nowadays rarely professional translators’ sole activity. Translation revision and post-editing are often also part of translators’ tasks. As such, traditional boundaries between the functions of translators, revisers and post-editors and any corresponding skill sets are starting to blur. In view of this evolution, one could expect Translation Studies scholars to have investigated the competences required to deal successfully with these new working conditions, in particular the difference or differences, if any, between translation competence (TC), translation revision competence (TRC) and post-editing competence (PEC). However, this has rarely been the case. The aim of this chapter is to provide a state-of-the-art review of TC, TRC and PEC models, focusing especially on TRC and PEC and their similarities to and differences with TC. We will show that TC, TRC and PEC models share some components or subcompetences, while still being different. This is the result of scholars building on existing models to design their own, hypothesizing that TC, TRC and PEC are different but share common ground. The question remains how different the three competences are and, for example, whether two of them are closer to each other than to the third.
