Irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia: The role of food as a trigger for symptoms and a therapeutic target

The overall aim of this research project is to advance our understanding of the role of dietary intake, and its interaction with intestinal microbiota, as a trigger for symptoms and a therapeutic approach in the major functional gastrointestinal disorders. We will conduct detailed epidemiological and clinical studies to assess the relationship between dietary intake symptom impact and psychosocial co-morbidity in irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. We will study the benefit of dietary interventions in both conditions, and will analyse whether this is determined by baseline characteristics or changes in gut microbiota.
