The grammar-lexicon interface of reflexively marked semi-auxiliary constructions in Spanish and French

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Semi-auxiliarization of reflexively marked verbs characterizes various construction types. It is more productive and presents a higher degree of grammaticalization in Spanish than in French. Spanish aspectual as well as modal pseudo-copular constructions admit more easily a non-controlling subject and their prototypically decausative-middle reading is more prone to oscillate with a middle passive one. The participial predicate constructions abstract away from the reflexive divided-self reading as well as from the plain passive more readily than their French counterparts. With infinitival complement, the parallelism is the greatest among the verbs of persistence; in addition, Spanish presents a wider array of reflexively marked motion and change-of-state verbs which function as modal-aspectual auxiliary of inception, disposition and craving. The semantic bleaching which accompanies the verbs’ constructional and argument-role flexibility further enables quite more Spanish than French verbs to convey a subjective, conceptualizer rather than subject oriented perspective.
