The New Creatures of Difference: A Look at the Concept of Repetition Within Dissipative Systems Theory

This essay also draws from inquiries in epistemology, systems theory, and evolutionary biology to examine the concept of repetition as a creature of difference. Here, repetition recasts traditional concepts of difference, identity, and change. Thus it should be no surprise that the work of Gilles Deleuze is a key reference. French philosopher Gilles Deleuze had perhaps gone furthest in endowing the problem of repetition with a measure of the impact it deserves to be credited with in contemporary thought. His Difference and Repetition offers one of the most sustained meditations on the concept of repetition in the history of Western philosophy, including in its relation to this tradition's concepts of difference and identity. Moreover, additional 20th century reflections on repetition, for instance, the systems theoretical framework of dissipative systems theory.
