Long observing sequences are essential for measuring the oscillation frequencies with the precision required, and to extract the lowest mode frequencies involved. The enormous value of long-term space-based observations has been demonstrated in the solar case by the joint ESA/NASA SOHO mission (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. This is now being followed by instruments on the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission.Large volumes of exquisite data on stellar oscillations of stars with a broad range of masses and ages are being collected by the CNES space mission CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and Transit) and the NASA Kepler mission.Extensive Earth-based observations of solar oscillations have been undertaken with the GONG network (Global Oscillations Network Group) and the Birmingham Oscillation Network (BiSON) to ensure continuous monitoring. A asteroseismic network, SONG (Stellar Observations Network Group) is being established under Danish leadership. Equally important for asteroseismology is the availability of supplementary data on the stars from more traditional observations, to determine their surface temperature, composition, radius, etc. Only through a coordinated use of the space- and ground-based data can the full potential of helio- and asteroseismology be realized." "Virtuele laboratoria voor exoplaneten en planeetvormende schijven" "Leen Decin" Sterrenkunde "The first detection of an exoplanet marked a new epoch in our hopes to detect extraterrestrial life. These detections have opened new parameter spaces and demonstrate that physical and chemical conditions exists in (A) planet forming disks that are vastly different from what we know in the solar system and in (B) (exo)planets that are vastly different from those that characterized planet Earth when life originated in an anoxic soup, and yet could allow for life-bearing chemistry to occur. In this MC-ITN, we focus on the development of Virtual Laboratories which will be the crucial tool to analyze in detail current and future disk and exoplanet observations, and for filling the gaps of incomplete observational data. Our Virtual Laboratories will use advanced numerical and statistical methods that comprise input from astrophysics, computational chemistry, laboratory and theoretical physics, geosciences, mathematics, and computer sciences. Virtual laboratories play a key role in simulating yet unexplored physico-chemical environments. Our 3 major objectives are: -- Scientific: Retrieve and predict the chemical composition of planet-forming disks and exoplanet atmospheres. -- Technological: Knowledge transfer between planet and disk community by the exchange of state-of-the-art codes. Apply and develop models of different complexity as link between big observational and numerical modelling data. Explore models as Virtual Laboratories for parameter spaces that cannot be reached by observations nor by (laboratory) experiments. -- Educational: Train complex modelling and big-data interpretation. Use fascination for exoplanets and their birthplaces to promote science in the society and in the local and wider communities due to dedicated art & education and art & science projects." HES-GEO will build on existing strengths of IGSM and opportunities provided by new regulations of science and higher education in Poland, combining them with the vast expertise in studying HES and in capacity building of three excellent partner institutions: Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Katholieke Unversiteit Leuven. To reach the HES-GEO main goal, three groups of activities will be carried out: [1] training young post-doctoral and early stage researchers in academic soft skills (scientific writing, project development and leadership) and in geospatial and EO technologies; [2] setting up research teams (RTs) led by young scientists of IGSM and supervised by experienced scientists from partner institutions, providing them guidance towards development and submission of competitive research proposals to European research programmes, and [3] establishing a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in IGSM, composed of the RTs and a new project / knowledge management and outreach unit. Building on trained young researchers developing new research ideas in the RTs, the CoE will gather the experiences of HES-GEO, and employ them beyond the project lifetime, ensuring sustainability and appropriate exploitation of project results. The three major activities of the project will be supported by diverse dissemination and communication measures, in order to increase HES-GEO overall visibility and establish research- and stakeholder-oriented networks, supporting sustainability of the future actions of the CoE."
