Experimental investigation of ablation and pyrolysis processes of carbon-phenolic ablators in atmospheric entry plasmas Vrije Universiteit Brussel
3D Ray Tracing Solver for Communication Blackout Analysis in Atmospheric Entry Missions KU Leuven
During the atmospheric entry phase at hypersonic speed, the radio communication from/to a space vehicle can be disrupted due to the formation of a plasma sheath within the surrounding flow field. In order to characterize such communication blackout phases, this work presents a numerical methodology combining Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of ionized chemically reacting entry flows by means of Computational Object-Oriented ...
Microstructure and gas-surface interaction studies of a low-density carbon-bonded carbon fiber composite in atmospheric entry plasmas Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF) composites are a cost-effective solution for the production of low-density carbon-phenolic Thermal Protection Systems (TPS). This new TPS for spacecraft requires new experimental data for model development and validation. Ablation experiments of a CBCF composite were carried out in an inductively-coupled plasma generator to assess the performance in high-enthalpy flows. Surface temperatures up to 2900 K led to ...
Thermal response of carbon composites submitted to high temperatures : application to atmospheric entry Universiteit Gent
Assessment of the Greenland ice sheet-atmosphere feedbacks for the next century with a regional atmospheric model coupled to an ice sheet model Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In the context of global warming, growing attention is paid to the evolution of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) and its contribution to sea-level rise at the centennial timescale. Atmosphere-GrIS interactions, such as the temperature-elevation and the albedo feedbacks, have the potential to modify the surface energy balance and thus to impact the GrIS surface mass balance (SMB). In turn, changes in the geometrical features of the ice sheet may ...
Measurement of the atmospheric neutrino energy spectrum from 100 GeV to 400 TeV with IceCube. Vrije Universiteit Brussel
A measurement of the atmospheric muon neutrino energy spectrum from 100 GeV to 400 TeV was performed using a data sample of about 18,000 up-going atmospheric muon neutrino events in IceCube. Boosted decision trees were used for event selection to reject mis-reconstructed atmospheric muons and obtain a sample of up-going muon neutrino events. Background contamination in the final event sample is less than one percent. This is the first ...
Optimized energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis of atmospheric aerosols collected at pristine and perturbed Amazon Basin sites Universiteit Antwerpen
Elemental composition of aerosols is important to source apportionment studies and to understand atmospheric processes that influence aerosol composition. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was applied for measuring the elemental composition of Amazonian atmospheric aerosols. The instrument used was a spectrometer Epsilon 5, PANalytical B. V., with tridimensional geometry that reduces the background signal with a polarized X-ray ...
Changes in atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic and sea-surge variations along the Belgian coast during the twentieth century KU Leuven
Wintertime (October-to-March period) 99th percentile of sea level (sea surges) at Ostend has increased at a rate of +3 mm/year (+1 mm/year) from 1925 to 2000. Relationships between daily sea surge at Ostend and five weather regimes Zonal (ZO), East Atlantic (EA), Greenland Above (GA), Blocking (BL), and Atlantic Ridge (AR) over the northeast Atlantic and Europe (40 degrees W-40 degrees E, 30 degrees-70 degrees N) are analysed during the period ...
Simulation of Airborne Wind Energy Systems in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer KU Leuven
Airborne wind energy is the umbrella appellation for tethered airborne devices harvesting energy from high altitude wind resources. This emerging technology is the breeding ground for a diverse ecosystem of companies and research institutes developing numerous system archetypes and prototypes. The wakes of airborne wind energy systems (AWES) are commonly neglected for the small-scale prototypes currently under development. Consequently, little ...
