Coherent transition radiation from the geomagnetically-induced current in cosmic-ray air showers Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We show that coherent transition radiation from the electrically-neutral transverse geomagnetic current (CTR- GM) in a cosmic-ray air shower provides a natural, standard model, explanation to the recent ``anomalous'' events observed by the ANITA detector. We demonstrate that for zenith angles less than roughly 70 degrees, combined with high surface elevation, the inclusion of CTR-GM can significantly alter the emitted electric field from a ...
Design of THz Radiators in Nanometer CMOS KU Leuven
In the frequency spectrum, the THz range is located between the millimeter wave and the far field infrared spectrum. There are numerous possible applications in the THz range such as medical/security imaging, spectroscopy, and communication. In these applications, THz signal sources are needed to provide the output signal in a transmitter or provide the LO signal in a heterodyne transceiver. CMOS technologies have the advantage of low cost in ...
Aeroacoustic sources identification using generalized inverse beamforming KU Leuven
Aeroacoustic source identification poses some challenges to the conventional techniques such as the conventional beamforming. The challenges can be summarized as the distributed nature of the aeroacoustic sources, in coherent or incoherent radiation, with multipole radiation characteristics. In order to cope with these difficulties, the Generalized Inverse Beamforming (GIB) is adopted. This method allows the simultaneous identification of ...
Optical confinement phenomena in plasmonic nanomaterials with predesigned electromagnetic properties. KU Leuven
In this work, fundamental ways to control, through nanostructuring, the line width and line shape of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) in individual coherent plasmonic nanocavities are investigated. The line width of a plasmon resonance is determined by the amount of radiative damping (scattering) and intrinsic, Ohmic losses (absorption). Intrinsic losses depend on the metal that is used and the quality of the fabrication process. ...
Coherent and incoherent second harmonic generation in planar G-shaped nanostructures KU Leuven
Azimuthal anisotropy of Stokes parameters of the second harmonic generation ( SHG) generated and observed in reflection from a periodic planar area of G-shaped gold nanostructures is studied. A strong anisotropy of both coherent and incoherent SHG components is observed. Finite-difference time-domain calculations prove that the observed effects are due to the anisotropic enhancement of the fundamental radiation within the G-shaped structures. ...
Ultrafast tristable spin memory of a coherent polariton gas Universiteit Antwerpen
Non-linear interactions in coherent gases are not only at the origin of bright and dark solitons and superfluids; they also give rise to phenomena such as multistability, which hold great promise for the development of advanced photonic and spintronic devices. In particular, spinor multistability in strongly coupled semiconductor microcavities shows that the spin of hundreds of exciton-polaritons can be coherently controlled, opening the route ...
Angular correlations and coherent parton branching Universiteit Antwerpen
We discuss coherent gluon radiation from space-like branching and its role in the Monte Carlo simulation of initial-state parton showers at high-energy colliders. We study effects of coherence due to non-collinear emission, and their potential relevance for the associated jet distributions.
Color coherence in multi-jet final states Universiteit Antwerpen
We discuss coherent QCD radiation front space-like parton branching and its effects on multi-jet final states at high-energy hadron colliders. Coherence effects for small longitudinal momentum fractions x are not included in the branching algorithms of standard shower Monte Carlo event; generators. On the other hand, they are taken into account only partially in perturbative next-to-leading-order calculations for multi-jets. Such effects are ...
Directed search for gravitational waves from Scorpius X-1 with initial LIGO data KU Leuven
© 2015 American Physical Society. We present results of a search for continuously emitted gravitational radiation, directed at the brightest low-mass x-ray binary, Scorpius X-1. Our semicoherent analysis covers 10 days of LIGO S5 data ranging from 50-550 Hz, and performs an incoherent sum of coherent F-statistic power distributed amongst frequency-modulated orbital sidebands. All candidates not removed at the veto stage were found to be ...
