Direct Access to Dithiobenzoate RAFT Agent Fragmentation Rate Coefficients by ESR Spin-Trapping Universiteit Hasselt
The beta-scission rate coefficient of tert-butyl radicals fragmenting off the intermediate resulting from their addition to tert-butyl dithiobenzoate-a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent-is estimated via the recently introduced electron spin resonance (ESR)-trapping methodology as a function of temperature. The newly introduced ESR-trapping methodology is critically evaluated and found to be reliable. At 20 degrees C, ...
Accelerated fragmentation of two thermoplastics (polylactic acid and polypropylene) into microplastics after UV radiation and seawater immersion Universiteit Gent
To better understand the fate and assess the ingestible fraction of microplastics (by aquatic organisms), it is essential to quantify and characterize of their released from larger items under environmental realistic conditions. However, the current information on the fragmentation and size-based characteristics of released microplastics, for example from bio-based thermoplastics, is largely unknown. The goal of our work was to assess the ...
Measuring fragmentation of open space in urbanised Flanders: an evaluation of four methods Universiteit Gent
The open space in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium, can hardly be seen as really open. From the Middle Ages onward this area has been known for its spread out development pattern, which has even strengthened in recent decades. Especially the residential ribbon development and the omnipresent infrastructure are widely recognised. These developments have led to an intense fragmentation of open space. In this paper we present two new methods ...
Experimental investigation of liquid fragmentation in hypersonic cross flow Universiteit Gent
This thesis presents an experimental investigation carried out to study penetration and fragmentation of liquid injected into Mach 6 hypersonic cross flow. Flow topology, shock and vortex systems, fragmentation and atomization mechanisms are investigated using high-speed photography, Schlieren photography, flow visualization and Phase Doppler Interferometry techniques. All experiments are conducted at the H-3 Mach 6 wind tunnel facility of the ...
Forest fragmentation modulates effects of tree species richness and composition on ecosystem multifunctionality Universiteit Gent
Forest fragments in highly disturbed landscapes provide important ecosystem services ranging from acting as biodiversity reservoir to providing timber or regulating hydrology. Managing the tree species richness and composition of these fragments to optimize their functioning and the deliverance of multiple ecosystem services is of great practical relevance. However, both the strength and direction of tree species richness and tree species ...
A study of the b-quark fragmentation function with the DELPHI detector at LEP I and an averaged distribution obtained at the Z Pole Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The nature of b-quark jet hadronisation has been investigated using data taken at the Z peak by the DELPHI detector at LEP. Two complementary methods are used to reconstruct the energy of weakly decaying b-hadrons, E^weak_B. The average value of x^weak_B = E^weak_B/E_beam is measured to be 0.699 +/- 0.011. The resulting x^weak_B distribution is then analysed in the framework of two choices for the perturbative contribution (parton shower and ...
For whom I love I want to be known : the scope of EU citizens' family reunification rights : addressing legal fragmentation in the European UnionU+2019s multi-layered legal order Universiteit Gent
Family is everything, but the possibility to enjoy family life is not always self-evident. The right to exercise family life is a fundamental principle that is widely recognized in international human rights law, but this right does not include the privilege to choose a specific country where family life can unfold. Families who are disseminated over different countries are therefore dependent on the rules of migration law to be (re)united. The ...
Testosterone Serum Levels Are Related to Sperm DNA Fragmentation Index Reduction after FSH Administration in Males with Idiopathic Infertility Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Purpose: Although a robust physiological rationale supports follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) use in male idiopathic infertility, useful biomarkers to evaluate its efficacy are not available. Thus, the primary aim of the study was to evaluate if testosterone serum levels are related to sperm DNA fragmentation (sDF) index change after FSH administration. The secondary aim was to confirm sDF index validity as a biomarker of FSH administration ...
