Past and present characteristics of Vierendeel's poutre à arcades Universiteit Gent
The Vierendeel is a frame with rigid joints patented in 1896 by Belgian engineer Arthur Vierendeel (1852-1940). His invention came about after he noticed that experiments and calculation methods on iron and steel frameworks didn’t agree, making his invention a response in the then discussion on secondary stresses. After designing a church tower and testing a fullscale bridge model during the 1897 Brussels World Fair, many bridges ‘système ...
Structure and stability of $Fe_{2}$ phases from density-functional theory calculations Universiteit Antwerpen
Fe(2)C plays a crucial role in the precipitation of iron carbides. Jack's structural models for epsilon-Fe(2)C, and non-stoichiometric epsilon-Fe(2.4)C, are analyzed using first-principles calculations. Several new configurations of epsilon-Fe(2)C with even higher stability are found. We show how epsilon-Fe(2)C transforms into eta-Fe(2)C, and address the structural relationships with the chi-Fe(5)C(2), theta-Fe(3)C and Fe(7)C(3) phases. The ...
Structural and magnetic transformations in the Fe-Mn binary system Universiteit Gent
The phase transformations of five binary iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) alloys with manganese contents ranging from 1 to 21 weight percent have been characterized in the temperature range between room temperature and 1250 degrees C. Differential scanning calorimetry and dilatometry were used to experimentally characterize both the phases and magnetic transformation temperatures. X-ray diffraction and light optical microscopy were employed for the room ...
Effect of hot and cold rolling on grain size and texture in Fe-2.4wt%Si strips Universiteit Gent
The magnetic properties of electrical steel such as magnetization behavior and specific magnetic losses are related to the microstructure and texture of the steel. The interest in the case of FeSi-alloys is to realize a low intensity on the {111} fiber, which is a different goal than that of conventional steels, where a high intensity on the {111} fiber and small grain size is desired. In this paper, we present and discuss some results of our ...
Development of riveting technology through an analysis of Belgian patents (1830-1940) Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The development of riveting technology in iron and steel structures in the 19th and 20th centuries were highly promoted by patents. Although riveting was widely used in buildings and civil engineering structures, little information about the development of this technology - how rivets were manufactured, various installation techniques - is available in literature. This paper discusses a database of patents related to riveting technology that was ...
Brussels Cinquantenaire Park halls: a structural revolution or evolution? Vrije Universiteit Brussel
To celebrate 50 years of independence, King Leopold II of Belgium conceived a jubilee park in 1880, which was later used for national and international exhibitions. The large-span exhibition hall that was built in 1888 on the site is still in use at present - after having experienced several architectural and functional mutations over time - and reflects a successful design. The structure consists of a series of three-bay wrought-iron portal ...
Brussels Model Schools - Structural Analysis of the Metal Roof Trusses (Part Two - Cases) Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In 1875 the Ligue de l'Enseignement and the Brussels architect Ernest Hendrickx realized the École Modèle, a new school building concept that embodied a new educational policy and philosophy, sustained by architecture. This school served as a guideline for over 55 schools, built between 1875 and 1920 in Brussels and its surroundings. One of the main characteristics of these model schools is their préau, a spacious and light central covered ...
