Quantum chemical study of the electronic structures of MnC2(-/0) clusters and interpretation of the anion photoelectron spectra KU Leuven
Cyclic and linear MnC2-/0 clusters have been theoretically studied. The 7A1and6A1 states of the cyclic isomer are calculated to be the ground states of the anionic and neutral cluster, respectively. All observed bands in the experimental photoelectron spectra of MnC2- could be assigned to the cyclic isomer. The X band is ascribed to an ionization during which an electron is detached from a nonbonding 4s4p hybrid orbital. The higher bands in the ...
Extending structures II: the quantum version Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Let $A$ be a Hopf algebra and $H$ a coalgebra. We shall describe and classify up to an isomorphism all Hopf algebras $E$ that factorize through $A$ and $H$: that is $E$ is a Hopf algebra such that $A$ is a Hopf subalgebra of $E$, $H$ is a subcoalgebra in $E$ with $1_E \in H$ and the multiplication map $A\otimes H \to E$ is bijective. The tool we use is a new product, we call it the unified product, in the construction of which $A$ and $H$ are ...

Quantum structure in cognition: Origins, developments, successes and expectations Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We provide an overview of the results we have attained in the last decade on the identification of quantum structures in cognition and, more specifically, in the formalization and representation of natural concepts. We firstly discuss the quantum foundational reasons that led us to investigate the mechanisms of formation and combination of concepts in human reasoning, starting from the empirically observed deviations from classical logical and ...
Quantum structure in cognition Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Similar to the 'guppy effect' identified in Osherson and Smith (1981), Hampton (1988a,b) measures substantial deviations from classical fuzzy set and probability models for membership weights for conjunction and disjunction, and calls them respectively 'overextension' and 'underextension'. We identify two types of non classical data and prove that membership weights of a specific item are (i) classical; (ii) non classical of the Delta-type, ...
Quantum interference in cognition: Structural aspects of the brain Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We identify the presence of typically quantum effects, namely 'superposition' and 'interference', in what happens when human concepts are combined, and provide a quantum model in complex Hilbert space that represents faithfully experimental data measuring the situation of combining concepts. Our model shows how 'interference of concepts' explains the effects of underextension and overextension when two concepts combine to the disjunction of ...
Quantum structure in cognition: Fundamentals and applications Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Experiments in cognitive science and decision theory show that the ways in which people combine concepts and make decisions cannot be described by classical logic and probability theory. This has serious implications for applied disciplines such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence and robotics. Inspired by a mathematical formalism that generalizes quantum mechanics the authors have constructed a contextual framework for both ...
