Preliminary characterization of flint raw material used on prehistoric sites in NW Belgium Universiteit Antwerpen Universiteit Gent
This study aims at analyzing the mineralogical, chemical, and structural characteristics of flint raw material used for the production of prehistoric stone tools in NW Belgium. Understanding these characteristics is important to recognize their value for tool making and even tool use during prehistory. Due to its formation process, flint is defined by a wide variety of internal structures, chemical variations, and impurities. Moreover, ...
Molecular evidence for the mixing of meat, fish and vegetables in Anglo-Saxon coarseware from Hamwic, UK KU Leuven
Absorbed lipid residues from twenty-four 7th to 9th century coarseware potsherds from the major Anglo-Saxon trading centre of Hamwic (Southampton, UK) were analysed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in order to reconstruct dietary habits of its population. The results show that the vessels were used for preparing ruminant fats and leafy vegetables. In addition, evidence was found for a minor contribution of aquatic foods. Beeswax ...
Development of Automatic Physiological and Behavioural Monitoring Systems for Pigs KU Leuven
Automated physiological and behavioural monitoring can play a major role in assessing the welfare of pigs. Conventional behaviour monitoring through human observers is time-consuming and labour-intensive. Wearable sensors to measure activity and physiological signals also need to be attached to animals, and so are not robust and animal-friendly for long-term monitoring. The aim of this thesis was to explore new approaches for monitoring of ...
Design Elements to Improve Mechanical and Clinical Parameters of a Total Temporomandibular Joint Replacement KU Leuven
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has multiple vital functions (e.g. chewing, breathing, sucking, swallowing,…) which are all derived from protrusion, retrusion, and lateralization of the mandible and opening and closing of the mouth. These are complex combinations of rotations and translations, which is a unique feature in the human body, as well as it being a bilateral joint acting as one unit. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are common, ...
Advanced musculoskeletal modeling techniques to complement ergonomic decision making in the workplace KU Leuven
Lower back and muscular pain in the upper limbs are reported in three out of five workers in the EU. In Belgium, 69% of the yearly-reported work-related disorders were musculoskeletal system disorders. Despite ongoing efforts to improve the working conditions, work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSDs) prevalence is still increasing. The origin of WMSDs has proven to be multifactorial, i.e., organizational, psychosocial, and individual risk ...
Plantar pressures in three types of indigenous footwear, commercial minimal shoes, and conventional Western shoes, compared to barefoot walking Universiteit Antwerpen
Humans evolved as barefoot walkers, and only started to use footwear recently in evolutionary history. It can be questioned what the effect is of footwear on gait. This effect has previously been studied for a range of conventional and athletic footwear, but this study focuses on indigenous footwear which does not have the features commonly associated with conventional footwear, such as a raised heel, a relatively narrow toe box, arch support, ...
MODERATOR ANALYSES OF THE COMPARISON BETWEEN REAL-TIME AND INTERMITTENTLY SCANNED CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING IN ADULTS WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES: A SUB-ANALYSIS OF THE ALERTT1 TRIAL Universiteit Hasselt
Background and Aims: The increasing use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) opens the door to the use of patient generated data to track disease progression and/or therapy effectiveness. The key parameter quantifying the quality of glucose control is the disposition index (DI), the product between insulin sensitivity (S I) and residual beta-cell function (F). Different methodologies were ...
Effectiveness and safety of safinamide in routine clinical practice in a Belgian Parkinson's disease population Universiteit Antwerpen
Background Safinamide is a recent multimodal antiparkinsonian drug that inhibits monoamine oxidase B and modulates the glutamatergic system with positive effects on motor and nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). This post-hoc analysis of the European SYNAPSES study provides first-time data on the use of safinamide in routine clinical practice in Belgium. Objective To describe the efficacy and safety of safinamide in Belgian PD patients ...
Experiences and needs of persons living with a household member infected with SARS-CoV-2 Universiteit Antwerpen
Background Households are important sites for transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and preventive measures are recommended. This study aimed to 1) investigate the impact of living with a person infected with SARS-CoV-2; 2) understand how household members implemented infection control recommendations in their home; and 3) identify the information and support needs of household members. Methods For this observational mixed-methods study, households with a ...
