Project

Tailored game

The reason for this project is the various requests for adapted games to be used with young people and adults, from BuSO schools and facilities for people with an intellectual disability. These questions come into VIVES SpellenLab on a regular basis. People are mainly looking for suitable games to practice / stimulate executive functions. When we look at these questions in detail, we often find that the games that most closely match the capabilities of their target group in terms of layout (both design and durability) and vice versa. For this reason, we would like to develop a methodology to select games that are suitable to exercise / stimulate executive functions. On the other hand, on the basis of educational design research, we want to adapt these games in a well-considered manner and immediately test them (or have them tested by students) with the target group. Since this project is a collaboration between the study areas of education and paramedical professions, we want to focus primarily on adapting games that can be used in special education and facilities for young people - adults with an intellectual disability. In addition to a number of BuSO schools and facilities for people with intellectual disabilities, which will function as test labs, we can also collaborate with Smartgames and the Maaklab (VIVES Kortrijk), among others. They will help us with the practical development of the prototypes. In a final phase, it is therefore the intention to test these in the various 'test labs' for their usability (and perhaps they can be marketed in the long term). However, we plan to quickly expand this protocol to other target groups, such as younger children with an intellectual disability, people with (early) dementia, people with an acquired brain injury, children and young people with a (multiple) motor disability. We therefore ideally want to take the Design for All idea as a basis. This project will result in a useful methodology to screen games that can be used to exercise executive functions in young people and adults with intellectual disabilities a selection of usable game concepts for practicing Executive functions in this target group various prototypes of adapted games and game materials to practice these executive functions in the field of work with the target group. With this project, we also aim to further expand and strengthen the expertise of the SpellenLab in close collaboration with the professional field and by involving students from different fields of study.
