How buying food online influences consumer food waste (OZR4219)

Worldwide, approximately one-third of the food produced for human consumption is wasted every year, while hundreds of millions of people are chronically undernourished and food insecure. In the growing body of literature on consumer food waste, several social practice studies have shown that planning and shopping routines are important predictors of food waste. The impact of the infrastructure of provision, and in particular the online channel, however, is still underexplored. The central aim of the current project therefore is to investigate how the online purchasing of food affects the amount of food that is wasted within households. In doing so, the study responds to the recent call for a holistic understanding of online grocery shopping and will enhance the understanding on how purchasing food online alters all food purchases in the household.
