Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) (NSIS1)

Migration plays a crucial role in the ever-evolving landscape of globalization, shaping economies and societies alike. It is also a contentious subject, sparking intense debates across societies. Over its initial five-year span (2019-2024), the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre for Migration and Minorities (BIRMM 1.0) united 128 researchers from 11 different fields at VUB, making it a hub for migration and minority studies. This initiative boosted VUB's visibility in this field, enhanced its success in securing research funding and raised the VUB’s international profile.
Now, as BIRMM transitions to its next phase, BIRMM 2.0, the focus is on maximizing the real-world impact of VUB's research on migration and minorities. To realize this impact, we will build upon four key strategies:
1. Building a diverse board of 22 external partners, including government bodies, NGOs, cultural institutions, and media partners, to foster various types of societal impact through our research.
2. Tackling migration and minorities-related issues at multiple levels, from local governance to EU
matters.
3. Introducing a range of accessible tools to share science with a larger public like targeted media campaigns, policy briefs, podcasts, and exhibitions.
4. Prioritizing collaboration with migrants and minority communities and our external partners, in both research and in the creation of our science popularization tools to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
By implementing these strategies, BIRMM will be able to make positive contributions to policies, to the lives of migrants and minority communities, inform professionals, and engage the wider public.
