The protein shift for three to six year olds and their environment: a playful step towards a sustainable world

How can we inspire children to embrace plant-based eating? Veggiehuisje investigates how playful methods can encourage sustainable diets among children and their families. In short The “Veggiehuisje” project is a research initiative aimed at encouraging the protein shift among 3- to 6-year-olds and their social environment. Through playful interactions, children learn to recognize plant-based proteins, stimulating conversations within their families and communities. Need and relevance Current protein consumption is predominantly animal-based (60%), while sustainable diets require at least 60% plant-based proteins. Young children are ideal change agents for this research as they are open to new experiences and free from biases. Introducing plant-based foods through play can initiate behavioral changes extending to their social surroundings. From approach to impact The research includes two test phases: classroom and home/recreational settings. Prototypes designed to engage children and their environment are tested. Impact assessments and qualitative observations map changes in knowledge and behavior. The ultimate goal is to develop scientifically validated play-based solutions to accelerate the protein shift and foster a sustainable future.
