AUTOGENOUS SETTING OF NON-HYDRAULIC LIME MORTARS BY MEANS OF MICROBIAL CARBONATE PRODUCTION

Product for accelerated carbonation of lime mortar, whereby internal hardening of the (non-hydraulic) lime is achieved by a blend of (1) carbondioxide producing micro-organisms and (2) nutrients and/or additives. The product is provided in the kneading water of the lime or in aggregates which are mixed in the lime, resulting in an autogenous setting (internal hardening) of the lime, in addition to the air hardening which acts at the surface. The autogenous setting follows from the binding of carbonate ions (in an alkaline environment carbondioxide is present as carbonate ions) with calcium ions, forming calciumcarbonate.
