Project

Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasound Transducer (pMUT) Array for Underwater Communication

This project is about designing a low power and small (um range) ultrasound piezoelectric transducer for mid-range (>1meter) underwater communication. The aforesaid device has many applications, such as the exploration of inaccessible environments, bio-sensing, surface mapping, etc.  The scientific approach of the project can be divided into three parts; piezoelectric material growing, fabrication of a communication module  and electronics. The main challenge is in the combination of the different disciplines to come to a functional module. At the end of the project, it is aimed to obtain a device with maximum size of 5x5x5 mm^3, in which the array of transducer are integrated, in order to yield a minimum communication range of 1m.
