Histology: a vital tool for endocrine and metabolic research

Our research focusses on numerous important endocrine and metabolic disorders. To this end, clinical studies are combined with in vitro cell culture models, but an important research tool are transgenic mouse models. Detailed analysis of appropriate mouse models is mandatory to advance insight in these diseases with enormous societal impact. Serum and urine analyses, are combined with cellular characterizations and protein and gene expression studies, but detailed and thorough histological analyses remain of utmost importance in order to fully understand pathological mechanisms that characterize the diseased state. Thus, all the PIs involved in this application use histological analysis on a regular basis and are dependent on timely and correct histological analysis for understanding the mouse phenotype. For these reasons, we have invested during several years in setting up a state-of-the-art histology and imaging lab that allows processing and analysis of paraffin and cryo-sections of different tissues. To keep our histology lab fully and adequately equipped to perform relevant biomedical research of international high standard we apply for replacement and extension of our histology equipment.
