Involving People with an Intellectual Disability in the Development of Pictograph Translation Technologies for Social Media Use

Social media websites and email play a substantial role in shaping access to social networks. All too often, people with an intellectual disability are excluded from taking part in the digital society, because of reading and writing difficulties. The Text-to-Pictograph and Pictograph-to-Text translation technologies are developed to address this issue. In this paper, we describe how the feedback and hands-on experiences of the end users guided us in improving our baseline systems.
