The Future of public green space: Envisioning a sustainable urban landscape as incubator of citizenship, social cohesion and alternative urban economics – the Case of Dhaka
Public green space is one of the essential elements of landscape and pivotal point for ecological system of a city which is made up of social, natural and economic systems. Increasing urbanization is being blamed for disappearing of this pivotal green space as well as open space in Dhaka .Being one of the fastest growing mega-cities, Dhaka has been experiencing continuous destruction of green areas, vacant lands , open spaces, riparian areas, green-ways ,parks and reserves in the pretext of urbanization since 1960.To ensure a sustainable growth and proper functioning of the ecosystem, social cohesion and healthy life, there is an urgent need for Dhaka to initiate strategic planning and designing of green space. This research aims to assess the future of public green space of Dhaka Metropolitan Development area as a sustainable urban landscape. This tries to address the potentials for preserving nature and strengthening with new types of use. It efforts to illustrate an assertive and insightful approach to the challenges of green space provision and use in Dhaka across different scale , from edge to core, moving from a purely eco-systems argument to one which fully recognizes and answers to the complexities of social interaction and the affordances of urban public space.
