A conceptual framework for the integration of assembly line feeding and route building

Book Contribution - Book Chapter Conference Contribution

In recent times, mass-customization has driven the complexity of mixed-model assembly line feeding as it sharply increases the number of parts required at a single assembly line. On the one hand, parts have to be supplied in a way such that the space at the border of line is managed well while costly preparation is avoided as much as possible. To this effect, different line feeding policies, such as line stocking, boxed-supply, sequencing, stationary and travelling kitting, can be considered. On the other hand, shortages during part supply, which may result in line stoppage, must be avoided. In this paper, we present a conceptual model that combines cost efficient decision making with regards to feeding and vehicle selection while avoiding line stoppage.
