Sabbatical Roel Vande Winkel: Film exhibition and cinema going in occupied Belgium, 1940-1944

For many years, Prof. dr. Roel Vande Winkel has been researching film screenings and cinema visits in occupied Belgium (1940-1944) during the Second World War. He has published on this at national and international level. Thanks to the call for Valorisation Initiatives of the Humanities and Social Sciences Group, he was able to launch the website www.cinema-in-occupied-belgium.be in November 2020 and thus share a large part of its research data with other scientists and with a wider public in accordance with the “digital humanities” approach. The logical next step is the publication of a richly illustrated monograph on this subject: an accessible book that tells how the German occupier reformed the Belgian film sector, what impact this had on the films made, distributed and screened in Belgium and (last but not least ) how the Belgian public reacted to it.
