Novel Process Mining Techniques for Discovering IoT-enhanced Business Processes

Business processes (BPs) are chains of events, activities, and
decisions, that are performed in a coordinated manner within an
organizational and technical environment and ultimately add value to
the organization and its customers. Process mining is a data science
approach that aims at automatically discovering, monitoring and
improving real BPs (e.g. an order to cash process, a fault to
resolution process, etc.) by extracting knowledge from event logs
readily available in today's information systems. With the rise of the
Internet of Things technology (IoT), we have now the opportunity to
better understand the process execution context, e.g., by tracking
product location and its physical conditions with sensors. IoT opens
new doors for effectively predicting the remaining processing time
and recommending activities that minimize flow times or improve the
end process result. However, there is no available approach capable
of mining processes that are enhanced with IoT technology. In this
project, we will develop novel IoT-enhanced BP context techniques
capable to give a complete picture of the process and its execution
context in order to give clear insights for process adaptation and
optimization.
