Project

DIACRONEX: Supporting material with diachronic linguistics courses.

The aim of this project is to offer supporting exercises with those courses in the second and third year of the Bachelor programe 'Linguistics and Literature' and in the Master programme 'Linguistics and Literature' that deal with the history (diachronic development) of modern languages. The focus will in the first instance be on English, and in the second instance on French, but the project is meant to offer a framework for other languages as well. The supporting material to be developed will be increasingly corpus-based and should allow students to (partially) take control of the learning process themselves in attaining their learning goals, especially as they learn to detect and explain phenomena of language change themselves. It can be expected that, when successfully completing the exercises, students will have received sufficient methodological training to independently detect language change in large text corpora. In this way, they will have fully reached the learning aims of the historical linguistics courses. Moreover, students wishing to write a bachelor paper or master thesis in the domain of historical linguistics will be maximally prepared to carry out historical linguistic research.
