Quantitative metagenomics: application of bacterial strains as internal standards for fecal microbiome analysis.
The exploitation of the predictive/diagnostic potential of metagenomic analyses of body-associated microbial ecosystems and the translation of the technique into medical practice are currently hampered by the explorative/qualitative nature of the methods applied. This project aims at the development of quantitative metagenomic techniques that will allow to overcome these hurdles and to exploit the full potential of microbiome research in reproducible and truly quantitative diagnostics.
