Project

This research plan covers two ambitious and cutting edge projects that aim at having decisive impact on how policies in the two areas of research are being defined. The first one will be on 'Democracy, Digitalization, and International Law' and the second on 'World Wide Migration: Migration in the Global South and the Global North'.

1)Democracy, Digitalization, and International Law Digitalization holds many promises for the 21st century. While some hail digitalization as a huge leap forward in the development of the human species, others are very much afraid of the implications of collecting vast amounts of data. Up until now, these questions are viewed mainly from a human rights perspective. This view is too narrow and shall be widened to allow for democracy to take centre stage. In addition, an international law perspective shall be applied as digitalization is as such international and transnational. The research project will look into how big data, the blockchain, AI/robotics and social networks will affect democracy and vice versa and which role international law may play in this development. 2)World Wide Migration: Migration in the Global South and the Global NorthThe different discourses in legal scholarship on migration concentrate mostly on the western receiving countries’ perspective. In contrast, the research project “World Wide Migration: Migration in the Global South and the Global North” shall not only focus on the western receiving countries but also on the southern receiving countries such as South Africa as well the countries from which people migrate. The aim of the research is to find possible solutions in international law as well as public law in order to address the root causes for emigration on the one hand and any necessary adaptations in the receiving countries to react to the arriving of immigrants on the other hand.
