Door het gebrek aan een officiële kolonie leeft vaak het idee dat de vroegmoderne Zuidelijke Nederlanden losstonden van het overzeese plantage- en slavernijstelsel. Dat klopt niet: talrijke ondernemers waren verbonden met de Atlantische economie. Zo was er het bedrijf Romberg & Consors, dat tijdens de jaren 1780 vanuit Gent aan slavenhandel deed – met een grote impact op de hele stad.
