A study of graphic gastronomy and intermediality Ghent University
This presentation focuses on a close reading of “Let’s eat cakes” (‘cake’ is pronounced as ‘go’ in Cantonese), a comic parody adapted from Disney’s Frozen theme song “Let it go”. Created by artist Siuhak in 2014, the story introduces diferent cakes and dim sums in Hong Kong. The panel backgrounds are film shots of the original Frozen singing scene, but the main character, Elsa, is substituted by a panda character, On On, who mocks Elsa by ...

Novelty and Tradition. The New Landscape for Gastronomy Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Exploration of post-1945 developments in Western cooking and eating, with as a guiding line the concepts of neophilia and neophobia. Measurement of sound speed vs. depth in South Pole ice for neutrino astronomy Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We have measured the speed of both pressure waves and shear waves as a function of depth between 80 and 500 m depth in South Pole ice with better than 1% precision. The measurements were made using the South Pole Acoustic Test Setup ({SPATS}), an array of transmitters and sensors deployed in the ice at South Pole Station in order to measure the acoustic properties relevant to acoustic detection of astrophysical neutrinos. The transmitters and ...
IAU Commission 41: History of Astronomy Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Commission 41 was created at the VIIth IAU General Assembly in Zürich in 1948. From an inauspicious start-Otto Neugebauer was appointed the first President in his absence, but proceeded to express his conviction that ``an international organization in the history of astronomy has no positive function. . .my only activity during my term of service consisted in iterated attempts to resign''-the Commission quickly assumed a key role in the ...

Newly found copies of Copernicus' principal work are described, the development of the concepts "sphaera" and "orbis coelestis" from ancient times via Copernicus to Kepler is investigated. The concept of harmonical cosmology of Kepler and A. Kircher is analyzed in a major paper. A rediscovered letter by Kepler is interpreted. Other papers deal with the university observatory of Bützow (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), the observatories installed ...
