200 kV Transmission Electron Microscope (200 kV TEM) Ghent University
It is a modern 200 kV electron microscope with high resolving power, to study the fine structure in 2D and 3D of biological samples. The new microscope will be fully equipped for both room temperature imaging of plastic-embedded samples, as well as imaging of frozen samples at cryogenic temperatures. This type of high-resolution information will be used to identify and answer questions about molecular contributions to medical-biological processes in cells and tissue in healthy or diseased states such as Alzheimer's disease. On the other hand, it can contribute to a better understanding of ...
Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer for phytohormone and B-vitamin analyses (UPLC-MS) Ghent University
This UPLC-MS system allows quantitative determination of ethylene- and B-vitamin related compounds and ensures efficient throughput of large numbers of samples. It allows researchers to gain fundamental knowledge on genes, proteins, and their associated metabolites of plants.

PHENOVION phenotyping system (PHENOVISION) Ghent University
PHENOVISION is a greenhouse infrastructure for automated, high-throughput phenotyping of crops with a capacity of 392 plants. Pots are transported in carriers on a conveyor belt system. Both pots and carriers have unique identifiers which makes it possible to treat each plant individually in transit from its position in the stationary growth area of the system to the weighing and irrigation stations and the imaging cabins. Currently, the system includes three weighing and irrigation stations with rotating platforms and the possibility to apply water and up to three different solutions. ...
Creation of a BruBotics Rehabilitation Research Center (Brubotics) Vrije Universiteit Brussel
there is a clear need to investigate the self-developed and
commercially available robotic systems in clinical and
professional target groups. The current application is driven by
the plan to install a BruBotics Rehabilitation Research Center at the Brussels Health Campus to facilitate the interactions between engineers, clinicians, ...
Imaging the invisible in preclinical models using magnetic particle imaging (MPI Magnetic Particle Imaging) Ghent University
The Magnetic Partcile Imaging (MPI) workflow combines some of the best features of existing medical imaging methods: (1) easy as optical imaging, (2) specific as positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging, (3) fast as computed tomography (CT) imaging, and (4) safe as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This will be explored in detail below. MPI has the sensitivity and ease of use of optical imaging. With a nanomolar detection limit, MPI sensitivity can be compared with in vivo fluorescence imaging, but without the confounding tissue ...
CASA PETIt: CAmera for Small Animal PET-Imaging  (CASA PETit) Vrije Universiteit Brussel
of choice for noninvasive imaging of molecular processes in
patients. It uses radioactive tracers that target diseased
cells, hereby providing essential information for the treating
physician. Clinical PET imaging is used to diagnose and
follow-up patients with cancer, cardiovascular, metabolic
and inflammatory diseases. We here apply for a device to
PET-image small laboratory animals. Like in patients, such a
camera system allows the noninvasive evaluation of
ongoing biological and ...
Multicollector-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectometer (MC-ICP-MS) Ghent University
The Thermo Scientific Neptune XT multi-collector ICP mass spectrometer is an instrument developed for high-precision isotopic analysis of metals, metalloids and some non-metals. The instrument is therefore equipped with a robust and efficient ion source (the ICP, or inductively coupled plasma), a double-focusing sector-field mass spectrometer with Nier-Johnson geometry for separation of the ion beams based on the ratio of mass to charge of the respective ions and an array of 9 faraday cups for simultaneous monitoring of the selected ion beams. Under ideal conditions, a measurement ...
