Interaction Mechanism of CO2 Ambient Adsorption on Transition Metal Coated Boron Sheets KU Leuven
Getting attached: Ca- and Sc-coated α-boron sheets are excellent absorbents for ambient CO2 capture with remarkably high adsorption energies (Eads) up to 3.0 eV (see figure). More importantly, the interaction mechanism between Sc and boron substrate and CO2 in chemisorption configurations is nonclassical and emerges in a two-step process. Microbial dissolution of hematite and associated cellular fossilization by reduced iron phases « A study of ancient microbe-mineral surface interactions » Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We report here on magnetite- and wustite-encrusted and geometrically oriented microbial-like
structures (MLS) attached to the surfaces of hematite (alfa-Fe2O3) crystals in a banded iron
formation. FE-SEM and SEM imaging showed a 3-D network of MLS arranged in 'coccoidal'
chains (1x~20_m) of various geometrical shapes: dichotomous and budding, parallel,
intersecting, triangular or sinusoidal. Single coccoids (~1_m in ...

Ancient genomes reveal complex patterns of population movement, interaction, and replacement in sub-Saharan Africa Ghent University
Africa hosts the greatest human genetic diversity globally, but legacies of ancient population interactions and dispersals across the continent remain understudied. Here, we report genome-wide data from 20 ancient sub-Saharan African individuals, including the first reported ancient DNA from the DRC, Uganda, and Botswana. These data demonstrate the contraction of diverse, once contiguous hunter-gatherer populations, and suggest the resistance to ...
Resurrected Protein Interaction Networks Reveal the Innovation Potential of Ancient Whole Genome Duplication KU Leuven Ghent University
The evolution of plants is characterized by whole-genome duplications, sometimes closely associated with the origin of large groups of species. The gamma (γ) genome triplication occurred at the origin of the core eudicots, which comprise ∼75% of flowering plants. To better understand the impact of whole-genome duplication, we studied the protein interaction network of MADS domain transcription factors, which are key regulators of reproductive ...
Trade and interaction in ancient Northeast Asia: reassessing archaeological and documentary sources Ghent University
At the beginning of the Common Era in East Asia, it is the culture of the Chinese mainland that maintained the position of an advanced civilization. And it is there that the first written reports on the cultures living in the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago took shape, reflecting both the growing interest on the Chinese side in things going on east of their borders and the fact that trade and interaction among the various ...
The intersubjectification of vision as interactional thought : vision imperatives in Ancient Greek diachrony Ghent University
Qualitative research about public health risk perceptions on ambient air pollution. A review study. Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Background
Understanding public health risk perceptions is essential in efficient environmental health management. In the light of the negative impact of air pollution on health and the direct and indirect mediation of this impact through risk perceptions, it is crucial to better understand the lay perceptions of air pollution. Since qualitative research methods are well suited for this aim, the central objective of this study is to ...

\"Identity in a World of Ambient Intelligence\" Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Like its ancestor "ubiquitous Computing," "ambient Intelligence" has been envisioned as a calm technology, staying in the periphery of our attention. Many ambient intelligent (AmI) devices interact with their users using a logic of anticipatory personalization to create the impression of an environment silently doing the right thing by itself. However, the machine profiling that underlies this personalized anticipation is not transparent in its ...
