Characterization of novel antibiotics against bacterial protein secretion.

Antibiotic resistance has a detrimental effect on both the health and economic wellbeing of societies; its threat to modern medicine has been internationally recognized and profusely studied in recent years. Gram-negative pathogens are particularly disconcerting to medical staff as they are becoming increasingly resistant to all or nearly all available antibiotic regimens. The emergence of MDR Gram-negative bacilli has affected almost every field of medicine and more than 50% of the deaths due to lower respiratory tract infections were caused by resistant bacteria. Currently, medical experts are concerned about the return to the pre-antibiotic age. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new-antibacterials against alternative cellular targets. Finding new antibiotics against new bacterial target proteins is challenging. Our research will find new targets of novel antibiotics and characterize their mode of action and binding site by different techniques.
