A CO2, water and waste neutral Flemish food industry by 2030

Book - Report

Subtitle:feasibility study and elaboration of possible approach
The Flemish environmental administration has been working closely with the Flemish food industry for some time now to achieve certain objectives within environmental policy. Within the framework of this cooperation, the aim is to examine the feasibility of turning the Flemish food industry into a CO2, water and waste neutral sector by 2030. The central research question of this assignment is therefore whether it is technically and economically feasible for the Flemish food industry to become CO2-, water- and waste-neutral by 2030.

More specifically, the aim is to:
- to put forward a well-founded and supported concept for the environmental neutrality of an industrial sector;
- to develop a useful and transparent instrument to assess the feasibility of a CO2, water and waste neutral food industry;
- to draw up a number of roadmaps with possible measures, actions and initiatives (for industry as well as government and other stakeholders). These roadmaps constitute the various scenarios for an environmentally neutral food industry.

The results in this study are not predictions, they are based on a baseline measurement for the different environmental compartments in the year 2010 without prospecting future changes within and outside the food industry. With the results, companies in the food industry, the sector and the authorities can take targeted action to set the path towards environmental neutrality. On the one hand, the results show how feasible it is today to achieve environmental neutrality by 2030. And on the other hand, what measures can be taken in the coming years to strive for environmental neutrality. The study also indicates the measures for which there are conflicts between different environmental compartments and where policy choices must therefore be made.
